Knit It! Fisherman Shrug - Corrected Pattern -

Through various channels, LouLou obtained the corrected instructions for the cover knit of the current Knit It! issue and I thought I would post them if anyone needs them. I included a brief intro from the editor, as I find their responsequite interesting to the individual who requested the proper instructions:

Please note - if these instructions are incorrect, sorry, but I do hope they are not. Other bloggers have finished this sweater with the wrong instructions, so maybe it isn't all that bad to use the magazine pattern. Who knows. All I know is, mine looks like 100% pure ass. But good luck to ya!

Thankfully The Amazing Race, Knitting Edition is about to start, because if not, my attention would not be as focused. Here is a list of things I want to knit next:

  • Red Sweater from Knit n Tonic
  • Big Vogue Sweater
  • Picolivi (Magknits) - Lion Brand Microspun
  • Lace bottom/top Sweater (patons décor)
  • Hourglass Sweater (patons décor-pink)
  • Hourglass Sweater (brooks farm yarn)
  • ESS (shelridge farm)
  • Scarf from Knit Stitch Book
  • Ribbed Cardi for Chris
  • Ribby Cardi for me (herb green)
  • News Boy Cap (DB Aran Cotton)
  • Socks For J

Who am I freaking kidding? There is no way these things are going to be knit this year. But I guess if you don't aim high you won't try. Yeah, okay, I'm dreaming in colour again. I will give it my best shot and see how it goes.

LouLou is so freaking funny, which I really need today. Look at what she has come up to describe our little race/competition. I LOVE IT.

What a rotten day my Sunday has turned into. So going from fantastic to what the hell has happened - during the day on Saturday we had 5 little girls skating in the back yard all afternoon, we ate pizza, played and had a great time. The Chris and I went to The Keg and had an amazing steak dinner. Came home and immediately fell asleep on the couch. Sounds great so far, right? Well, this is where things went really wrong - Sunday morning we wake up to the sound of the cat puking, and crapping every where. So in some very hazy moments I made a pretty bad decision - I took the cat to the emergency vet clinic only to be told the cat's condition is NOT an emergency and they would not be able to give us a definitive answer to what is wrong with her- all for 125.00 bucks.

I can handle the 125.00 payment, what really threw me over the edge was the $45.00 charge for shaving and cleaning the cat's butt of crap. Oh, and had I waited until my vet's on call doctor called me, I would have saved that money and given it to a clinic that gives a crap. But who knew they would call almost as soon as I left the freaking driveway. Apparently not me.

And I still have to bring her to the clinic because she is now throwing up blood. Poor thing.

Speaking of crap, here is the completed Shrug from the Knit It! magazine:

Who knew I had wings - in the front? And for fun, the back:

Really hate this freaking sweater. All in all this day has been crap (no pun intended)

Try to have a good one.

In preparation for the race with LouLou, I'm finishing up some loose end knitting. For example, panel #1 of 5 is finally done, after 3 years. Only 4 more to go. I guess I got easily distracted while knitting this, and I don't think it is because of the pattern or the yarn, I just wanted to finish other smaller projects. But now that I have finished one, I hope I can find the motivation to finish a second one in the next few months.

Last night I pulled out the pieces of the Shrug and seamed it and all that is left is picking up the stitches and knitting 4" or so of 2x2 ribbing. Simple, I think. I am not sure how well it is going to fit, but I will see. I have turned the heel of the 2nd Fleece Artist sock, so I think I will be in a pretty good position to only have the Top Down Cardi to work on come Tuesday when the big gun blasts for us to start.
Keep you posted.

Okay folks, the race is on, LouLou has given the official go ahead to start the race on who can finish the Top Down Cardi first. She has knit her collar and has started the body. Don't know why this little challenge is so exciting to me. I don't care if I finish first (ok, maybe that is a bit of a lie), I guess it is knowing that I will have a finished sweater sooner rather than later.

On the way to work this morning, I was thinking what I would use as closures. A zipper? Nah, way too much sewing. Buttons? Nah, will look like a plain ole cardi. And who needs one of those? I can buy one for 19.99 at the local walmart. Then it hit me, those metal toggles things, but nicer than those I linked to. Hopefully you get the idea, and if not, when the cardi is done, it will then be crystal clear. I'm sure a sewing/fabric place sells them.

At SnB on Tuesday, Brenda said she bought the Red Sweater pattern from Knit n'Tonic. Since I have not read her blog in a long time I didn't realize she had a new pattern up for sale. So this morning when I finally remembered to check it out, I was blown away. I love that cardi. So of course I immediately emailed Brenda and put her up for a knitting challenge, once my first challenge to LouLou is complete. Wonder if she will bite. Brenda??????

Oh Lou Lou - You are SO on! Tuesday Night, SnB, The Second Cup 7pm. Get your yarn, needles and pattern and get ready to cry like a baby because we KNOW who will finish first.

I am also thinking I deserve a handicap start, I do have two kids so I think 1" for each kid as a head start, and that should make it even. What do you think?

I think we have another contender - Miss Tanya - are you ready?

Anyone else interested in competing in this race?

Not much knitting to report - kind of busy at work and at home. I have finished the first Fleece Artist sock. Fleece Artist sock yarn is a dream to knit with, however I really don't like the stitch definition I'm getting. I went down to 2.25mm because if I made the sock with 2.5mm it would have been huge, but using the 2.5mm - I like the look of the stitches better. I'm thinking I'll buy another skein, knit with 2.5mm and see how it goes.

Decisions, decisions, decisions.

I can't wait to finish these socks because I am so hot to trot for this sweater. I am using Red Heart Cozy wool (oh the shame), but this stuff is oh so soft, especially knit on huge honking needles. It is soft and squishy, and I can't wait to wear it next to my skin. I cast on and started the brioche for 3.5", and it looks pretty good, but am experiencing issues with this stitch on the purl side. I emailed Katherine for help, so I'm sure between her and I , I'll be set on the right track. Truth be told, it will be more Katherine than myself.

Lou Lou, who by the way is one of the funniest ladies I have met in a long, long time is going to knit the Top Down Cardi along side me. I wonder who will finish first? I do think it will be me because I have a girl's only weekend coming up soon, a trip to the Lake with the hubby, and a trip to the Falls - which equals lots o' lots of knitting time. Sorry Lou Lou, but I'm just stating the facts.

You ever meet someone end immediately hit it off? Well that is how I feel with Lou Lou. She is such a great person and as I said funnier than hell. She is a great addition to our SnB group. Oh and her friend Heather - a riot. Love when they come out for the evening.

BTW Brenda - I did graft the toe of the sock last night.

I forgot to tell you - I'm going to cast on for this sweater shortly, in a deep red wine colour. Can't wait.

For some strange reason I need to join a new ball of yarn to each of my BIL's sock and that means I will have to weave in the ends, pain in the ass if you ask me, especially with socks. I'll do it, because I have no other choice AND then, it hit me while on the train to work today - I'm knitting with 100% wool, so I can russian join the suckers together and viola no weaving in the ends. Solves that problem.

There are days I just need to give my head a big shake - wish I would have thought of that little secret weapon with the first sock. Oh well, live and learn.

I still haven't finished the 2nd one, but mark my words my pretty - it will be done tonight! Unless the other WIPs distract me. No, I must finish this sock. It is Sock Month for crying out loud.

Have a great weekend.

Edited to Add: No SnB for me tonight - I'm stuck at work and can't seem to get unstuck. AAAHHH!

However, I've been on a conference call since 1pm so I've been knitting the sock, but now I've run out of yarn, what to do, what to do.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nothing much to report, however after the SnB tonight I might have a finished pair of socks for
my BIL.
One pair will be done, one and half to go.

I kind of cheated with my plan of only knitting socks this month, but I think the devil made me do it. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.

I finished the shrug/bolero and now need to seam the sucker:

I still can't believe the amount of errors in what appears to be such a simple pattern. Thanks to High Energy Knits, she figured everything out and was kind enough to post the information.

I finished one of my BIL's socks and started the 2nd one, so I am well on my way to completing the plan. Got to love when a plan falls into place.

Last night, I went skiing for the first time in over 10 years with my girls and man it is not as easy as most people make it look. After a few trys down the little hill, my four year old was going up to the top on the magic carpet by herself and shooting like a bullet down to the bottom of the hill.

I still can't get over how well she did. And my older one? I didn't see her all night - she was with her father going up and down the big hills. BIG Hills. He even has to yell at her to slow down, which BTW she doesn't listen to him - she just keeps on going.

I am not sure what I am going to do when my 4 year old wants to go down the big hills, I know - knit in the Chalet because believe me I certainly won't be going down any big hills. I'm a chicken ya know.

Have a good one.

My Blogger dashboard is now in English - I mouse over all the options and found Language - set it back to normal and now everything is fine.

I am wondering how such a simple bolero has so many freaking errors in the pattern? For example, the schematic indicates you knit the back till 7.5", then start raglan decrease. However, the pattern states to knit to 10". I doubt it is 10" because once the bolero is seamed you need to pick up and knit the collar for 4" making the length 14", which would kind of defeat the purpose of a bolero. So this time I'll follow the schematic dimensions.

Now the sleeves instructions - you cast on 30 stitches, rib, increase to 36 stitches, knit to arm pit, yadda yadda yadda, then decrease both sides 15 times and place remaining 18 stitches on holder. Yeah - I'm no where near a brilliant mathematician - but come on, once you finish 15 decreases (dec 30 stitches) you have only 6 stitches left. Or maybe you only need to decrease to 18 stitches, which would mean you decrease 9 times. At this point I'm not sure, I'll knit the 2nd sleeve, lay all the pieces where they should be and then determine how many decreases make sense.

You would think this was a simple pattern to write up and wouldn't have so many errors. But the plus side of this story is - now I can spot the errors and knit the way I think, where as before I would knit the sweater to the exact instructions and feel frustrated as hell.

Even though this little bolero is going somewhat smoothly, I am happy I finished my BIL's first sock and will start the 2nd one at my weekly work SnB. Thank goodness because I am getting quite sick of knitting socks and can't wait until I can concentrate on my Cutaway and Top Down Cardi.

I have no idea why my Blogger Dashboard options are in Chinese. Weird. Thankfully I know which buttons to click to do what I want, however, I wonder how long it will stay this way. I know I didn't change any settings, and now I don't even know which setting to click to get it back to english. Weird.

Any one else experiencing this issue? If so, help me out.

Just so you know, February is still all about socks. I started my BIL's sock and just starting turning the heel this morning, so I am well on my way. Along with everyone else, I'll be watching the Opening Ceremonies on TV, so that means lots and lots of knitting time - maybe I'll finish one of the socks tonight. Stay tuned.

Another pair of socks done, one is a bit bigger but that is what I get when I don't write down what I did with the first sock to know how to duplicate it. These are for my nephew, so he won't care about the difference - he is only one years old, what does he know? Thankfully nothing about socks.

And these Fleece Artist socks are for me:

As you can see, I just started the heel so I'm on my way to a finished sock. I am still sticking to my plan of only knitting socks, which I did at the SnB last night. I dutifully cast on for my BIL's sock which I am glad I did because now I can bring that puppy with me and knit on it during any free tim I might have in the day.

I wonder what I will knit if I finish all the socks on the list before then end of February? Should I make more? Or shall I start something new? But don't hold your breath folks, my work/family life seems to get in the way when I think I'm going to have all this time to knit.

I guess February is more than just sock month for me. I passed by a store with the new Knit It magazine on display and loved the cover bolero. So, I bought it, pulled out some yarn from the stash and started and almost finished the back last night. My gauge is off by one stitch, but I am making the larger size, so maybe, just maybe it might fit. If not, oh well. It would so serve me right considering my plan was to only knit socks. Tonight is SnB night, so only socks are coming with me. My nephew's pair are almost done, I'm about to start the heel of my sock and hopefully I'll cast on for my BIL's pair. Other than this bolero I'm sticking to my plan, that should make the knitting Gods happy.

Here is my in progress shot of M's socks:

If you look closely you will notice the unfinished sock does not have a ball of yarn attached to the end of it because I ran out of yarn. I did expect this to happen, however I still committed to making her a pair with the left over yarn from my cable/rib socks. I did this because Corrie is making a pair of socks for herself with the same colour and will give me her left overs to finish up M's. Plus the other part of my plan was to force Corrie to finish up her first pair of socks - if she know I am waiting, her socks will get priorty. Plus, she needs something small to carry with her on her way to Hawaii.

She better have a pair of socks and her leftovers when she returns, or else.
I also started a pair of socks for me using Fleece Artist sock yarn on 2.5mm needles and they were too big, so I ripped it out and started again using 2.25mm and these socks seem too big as well. Maybe I need to rip them out and cast on less than 60 stitches. Hmm, I have no idea why they are so freaking loose. Or maybe I 'll give them to my girlfriend who as a bigger calf and larger foot then me and buy myself some more of the FA sock yarn.

Yeah, that sounds like a great plan.
It appears I am full of plans this week. Let's hope they are all successful.

Have a good one folks.

Wednesday, February 01, 2006

I have declared February the month of knitting socks. This month I plan to make socks for:

  • My brother in law (need to rip the 1st one - it turned out really wonky)
  • My nephew (have the yarn - just need to kick my butt and start)
  • My daughter (one done, 2nd one started)
  • Myself (started 1st one)

February is a short month, I don't want to have high hopes of finishing a whole bunch of stuff and then fail. Socks are small and relatively quick, as long as I keep to my tried and true method, I should be fine. And the great thing is, everyone will be so happy with the socks. It is a win win situation.

During the month of January I set goals, which I met, all except finishing the one panel of the blanket I started in January 2003. I only have 4" left to go and the damn panel will be done. Then only 4 more panels to go. I love this blanket, however I can never seem to get in the mood to knit it, so I force myself to knit it on the mornings when I have a few minutes. The thing that keeps me going is, I know it will be so lovely when it is done, and I will enjoy it immensely that I can't possibly rip it out and use the yarn for something else.

I am sure it will be another 3-6 years before this thing is done, but I must finish what I started.

Have a good one folks.
